Themed Gaming Accessories

As the fimir project is ticking along nicely now, recently my mind wandered to all the accoutrements I'd like to add to it to keep the theme running. The most obvious one was dice. Having found the appropriate fimir icon I wanted, I contacted The Dice Shop, and they made some snazzy custom dice up for me.

Next up was somewhere to put said dice. I had my eye out for a nice dice bag with something to connect it to the army. I finally found a perfect leather dice bag with a single eye on it at Abbot Hollow Studios on Etsy. Etsy is a dangerous site, and will relieve you of all your money in no time flat. Randy from Abbot Hollow is very accommodating and he is super fast in sending out your stuff. Definitely worth a look for dice bags as well as other leathery goodness. Not cheap, but not crazy expensive either.

As I use the warriors of chaos list, I'm making some counters to show the effects of the eye of the gods table, forsaken table and all the other tables and effects that can happen in game. They are nice enough, simple laminated prints, but I'm keeping an eye out for someone who makes custom made counters.

There's other ways you can spread the theme of the army to the accessories, the army display board which I talked about recently is an obvious way, as well as custom terrain. Some folks even have little army background sheets that they present with the army when on display at tourneys. One thing strikes me, nobody makes gaming themed tape measures, Games Workshop excepted, and anybody I've missed. Bit of a niche in the market there. Even some kind of cover for a measure themed to the generic races would be cool.

So, how far do you go with adding the extra little accessories to your army? Do you even care? Seems if you go to the trouble of assembling, converting and painting the army, it's a small extra step!

  1. Ooh, I do like the Heroquest Fimir logo on those dice... I take it that's a 'one'... the number of perfection in Fimir terms! And the dice bag would work nicely with my Arkham Horror set. If you like I can laser cut some templates for you? Just need a jpg image and your choice of acrylic sheet. I've done a lot of customisation on my Heroquest set, using D10s instead of D6s for combat dice and with laser cut character sheets and Body/Mind point counters. Oh, and my soon-to-be-picked-up-again Snotlings have really tiny dice for the wound counters on their bases.

  2. Or, looking at the picture a bit better, they may be 6s! :)

    1. Laser cut templates? I might just take you up on that Fimm, thanks very much! Got any shots of your character sheets?

The ones on the dice would have been the obvious choice, but generally the six is a happier result, and I want to be happy when I see that face!

    2. The character sheets are here: http://gamesorkshop.blogspot.co.uk/2012/12/ultimate-heroquest-part-1.html

They're laser-cut pine with acrylic counters.

    3. Ah, I remember these! Amazing stuff! If you could do some acrylic counters for me, I would be forever in your debt. What colours you got? Can you do different shapes/sizes?

    4. I can do anything up to 300x600mm. You'd need to supply a black and white Jpg with a note as to which bits need cutting out and which bits are decoration for etching. Oh, and dimensions in case something goes awry in the import. It's a school so you'd also need to purchase some acrylic, our stock is not mine to distribute. 3 or 5mm is best, easy to find A4 sheets online. Email me (geoff@propworkshop.co.uk) and I'll give you an address to get it sent to.

  3. Yep, I'm a sucker for this type of thing too. Custom dice and themed terrain I own, but must admit I don't have a special dice bag! On the measuring thing, there are ebay sellers making sticks for Saga with nice Celtic designs that would suit you well, but they are just 12 inches, 8 inches, 4 inches and 2 inches long. Enough for movement and short range spells, might be worth a look.

    1. Considering I'm a hair's breadth away from diving into Saga myself, that's a good idea right there.

  4. Right now I'm getting ready to make some custom counters for SoBH and Skulldred. Since I base on washers, I'm planning on just puttying the little hole in the middle and priming, then freehanding in the style of oldhammer shields.

They definitely won't be uniform, but they will be mine.

Also, they're magnetic! And if you have a magnetized display board it shouldn't be hard to figure out a creative way to store them on it.

I also painted up a quick three-range measuring stick for SoBH using a bit of sprue in my warband's colors.
