I've returned to my Drunes for Sláine, having neglected them for over a year. I've got a big Sláine weekend coming up in a March, so it's time for reinforcements. You kind of need a few packs of skull swords for Sláine to hew through, in fairness.</p>These lay partially painted on my shelf for almost a year, so it's very nice to get them finished. <p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjT7OJZsYYC_ZxRS7MHcpKKVX4lit2GZQeu-cBh9KTR_kgQ9DYAIKyjZ1V_ZQYe-anGlKxJMZhT8vMtUFok58awBMRV3AklkMEzsgu3uqket0t1PCnxRZ_q8ZVwoZ56pfJi546EDpDI7vxridbkv6Bm4dXL-IKPbidKjjDONESrbROfKyjPslV68OFTXyY/s1490/Slaine_14.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1490" height="430" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjT7OJZsYYC_ZxRS7MHcpKKVX4lit2GZQeu-cBh9KTR_kgQ9DYAIKyjZ1V_ZQYe-anGlKxJMZhT8vMtUFok58awBMRV3AklkMEzsgu3uqket0t1PCnxRZ_q8ZVwoZ56pfJi546EDpDI7vxridbkv6Bm4dXL-IKPbidKjjDONESrbROfKyjPslV68OFTXyY/w640-h430/Slaine_14.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>I'm still using mostly Contrast paints over Wraithbone spray for these, as that's how I painted the others. This day I have a strange fellow for you. Serzhant Ursov, undead shapechanger and hard-nosed (it's made of bone) sergeant. </p><p>Ursov is a were-bear, and as soon as I read about this entry in the Silver Bayonet Russian list, I knew this was my guy. Technically an undead dogman from Flintloque's 666th foot box, he's just the ticket for my particularly eccentric unit. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHvDEWqYSRCfRt0NO0oacUdGkDRGT6nNxmWwIRf1sRMl43-I3QnD06rfEYeOidoc2oZ63Maq1FCETpR-7jESpFqm2DdCw7nfGVvTn9RRvN5o-hWsKyU7nPhwwWLf0L1eikzDXSyhaBdk2J7g5mcgZ0RWjNpH3FnLIPJ8qz9GdpjhMzuB0qV2aMYj57Ztw/s1006/Undead_57.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1006" height="636" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHvDEWqYSRCfRt0NO0oacUdGkDRGT6nNxmWwIRf1sRMl43-I3QnD06rfEYeOidoc2oZ63Maq1FCETpR-7jESpFqm2DdCw7nfGVvTn9RRvN5o-hWsKyU7nPhwwWLf0L1eikzDXSyhaBdk2J7g5mcgZ0RWjNpH3FnLIPJ8qz9GdpjhMzuB0qV2aMYj57Ztw/w640-h636/Undead_57.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p><i>Trudging up the snow-laden hillside, the jerky, ungainly infantry were having a hard time of it. Though indefatigable, they were making slow progress as they stumbled and occasionally fell, vanishing into the white drifts with undignified puffs of snow.</i></p><p><i>Morozov would have been hugely entertained if it wasn't costing them so much time. They'd never make it to the forest by dawn at this rate. </i></p><p><i>Near the base of the rise, Ursov sighed heavily as he righted a groaning private and barked orders at the flailing soldiers nearby. It was taking too long. Far too long. Desperate measures were called for. Handing his rifle and sword to his ensign, a sudden ripping sound exclaimed his drastic solution. </i></p><p><i>Morozov's eyebrows raised slightly as he beheld the huge cadaverous bear bounding up the hillside, several zombified line infantry gripping it's flanks or simply riding on its back. A novel solution to be sure, but one that would see them make the cover of the forest eaves with time to spare. As the huge Ursa thundered past, Morozov was certain he heard one of the privates make a 'Wooo!' noise. </i></p><p><i>Just the wind, he reassured himself.</i></p><p>The sculpt is surprisingly detailed, so took me EVEN LONGER than normal to paint. It does suffer from Bob Olley syndrome (and I love Olley sculpts) of wondering, is that bit a fold of cloth, or flesh, or billowing smoke. Or all three? I acquired a new love for the Contrast paint Garaghak's Sewer painting Ursov. Duly thinned with medium it makes for a fine weathering wash.</p><p>Finishing Ursov gives me, finally, a full unit. Almost. I still need the bear form for Ursov. 'Where will you get an undead bear, eh Dave?' Hah I would say to you. HAH. In this age of miniature abundance, undead bears are no challenge. Gunner three, my artillerist.<p></p><p>Three is another Flintloque miniature, this time from the Corpseov line artillery set. The set has quite a few crew, bit this guy, with his ramrod, (which doubles as a handy two-handed weapon) looked like the very fellow for the job.</p><p><i>Gunner Three had no memory of his former life, he was named for his function once raised to undeath, that of servicing the mighty cannon to which he and his companions were bound. To say he performed this function dutifully would be to give him too much credit. It was no more dutiful than a mill wheel turning. He had little awareness of the tasks he performed, and no sense of the passage of time.</i></p><p><i>This was all to change one bitter morning as their line was raked by enemy fire. The baleful metal monster he and his fellows were slaved to took a direct hit, and as it was blasted to spinning shrapnel the grim hold it had exerted over its crew simply ceased. Along with many of the crew, it must be said.</i></p><p><i>Gunner Three was released from his fugue, his senses and thoughts boiling back up to fill his mind in a wave of renewed self-awareness. Skills long forgotten crept back into his remembrance, there to augment his now expert knowledge of artillery and explosives. Such a useful soldier was not left idle long, and soon he was sequestered to Morozov's retinue.</i></p><p><i>He never could remember his name though.</i></p><p>Once again, I dove into the historical internet ocean for info on the correct uniform for a Napoleonic artilleryman, and applied… elements of it to the artillerist’s ragged gear. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJPDIWu2J5epsKJcNw9lbKCYWddn_oJunN7qs3m1c4YEZvCHrIUdXCQ4ocvaAyVMHM1bp0PcY5rDivZkAWgmz0xbhJsi4J9ZZ49goYA0Fv8CGqIhzcJd8oKPWxFdkFxcKUxi7z2FmP6Nq8-oebzgbtmKlEYZ0UBNa1CRm-CiZcms-5asR4wFXBUJKOmeY/s1006/Undead_55.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1006" height="636" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJPDIWu2J5epsKJcNw9lbKCYWddn_oJunN7qs3m1c4YEZvCHrIUdXCQ4ocvaAyVMHM1bp0PcY5rDivZkAWgmz0xbhJsi4J9ZZ49goYA0Fv8CGqIhzcJd8oKPWxFdkFxcKUxi7z2FmP6Nq8-oebzgbtmKlEYZ0UBNa1CRm-CiZcms-5asR4wFXBUJKOmeY/w640-h636/Undead_55.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p>For painting, I continue to work contrast into my style, especially on the skin. Some wee loot tokens I recently finished for Stargrave. Three physical, three data. These were used at the recent Stargrave weekend when my buddies and I pew-pewed our way across three days of sci-fi action. <p></p><p>The Necromunda control panels are ideal data tokens, and I used one of <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dw4uTnf7vAQ">Duncan's old GW videos</a> for some tips on painting up the displays. I think it worked out pretty nicely.</p><p>The physical loot are a shrine, also from Necromunda, and two bits box builds of machinery doohickeys. Some drybrushing, washes, contrast paints, weathering, a green glaze for the physical, a red for the data, and that's them done!</p>Mr Saturdayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03092917415087033316noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8999006694513130928.post-84339992150356397132023-06-04T19:59:00.000+01:002023-06-04T19:59:28.825+01:00Dress a Willy Sculpting Challenge<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhj2-jRiKqXVOZwzHwPbFMpUhVRakCS4aAJ6JIfa__sb905DwCfmLomtK5W7bQA-stQfkoss-wAezcZsEvnSIKeQtg_cWGAYg4Pd3KcS29e6Lkp_n8O6omGCsP7M_Z3Jqc7QgkuU2jS-nj1CS148WWhvspHkip50ecHYZVSeu03UjWM_zTz1R7rwxaj/s1006/GorkaMorka_01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1006" height="636" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhj2-jRiKqXVOZwzHwPbFMpUhVRakCS4aAJ6JIfa__sb905DwCfmLomtK5W7bQA-stQfkoss-wAezcZsEvnSIKeQtg_cWGAYg4Pd3KcS29e6Lkp_n8O6omGCsP7M_Z3Jqc7QgkuU2jS-nj1CS148WWhvspHkip50ecHYZVSeu03UjWM_zTz1R7rwxaj/w640-h636/GorkaMorka_01.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />Something a little more unusual today. Back in March I came across the 'Dress a Willy' sculpting challenge on <a href="https://thestilltower.bigcartel.com/">TheStillTower</a> on instagram. Aside from the fact I was in a GorkaMorka adjacent mood, the idea of a naked, scrawny wee human toting gear taken from a dead grot made me chuckle something fierce. I contacted Pablo at TheStillTower and pleaded for a copy of wee Willy to convert and paint up. Pablo was very amiable and sent me on a copy right away.<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_L6UkTCKbDrXU6k8DCGF5VaShoKng9Ip-_4v_AXa-HS55emkCzQDnhns3Zs_DoG6HUF5_xQQDQ6U0t8-np8qXFJFC1nHVhJ25VJrcohx6bR1zmjryrbqQKGIxTVgJQbid0q8c69jH_jPjKIJaPpxB1-dOTi1fRXe4sxfUuHd-M2rQ5DE5l_uqZcmN/s1095/Screenshot_20230427-143259_Instagram.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1095" data-original-width="720" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_L6UkTCKbDrXU6k8DCGF5VaShoKng9Ip-_4v_AXa-HS55emkCzQDnhns3Zs_DoG6HUF5_xQQDQ6U0t8-np8qXFJFC1nHVhJ25VJrcohx6bR1zmjryrbqQKGIxTVgJQbid0q8c69jH_jPjKIJaPpxB1-dOTi1fRXe4sxfUuHd-M2rQ5DE5l_uqZcmN/w421-h640/Screenshot_20230427-143259_Instagram.jpg" width="421" /></a></div><p>One thing I liked when the mini arrived was that the resin support block he was attached to was sculpted as orky ruins and glyphs. Solid idea.</p><p>First off, one thing I was NOT doing was giving him any pants. It was far too hilarious leaving him flying free. Under the terms of the competition though, he had to be converted. even slightly. Here is the pile of Willie's ready to be posted. Some other folks went a lot further, such as the master convertor Axiom from <a href="https://magpieandoldlead.blogspot.com/2023/04/dress-willy-new-radneck.html">Magpie and Old Lead</a>. If you've not checked out Axiom's blog, do yourself a favour and wander on over.</p><p>For painting, I wanted wee Willy (giggle) to be a test model for an upcoming Digga mob for GorkaMorka. Tiny metal, plastic or resin protagonists that we've become unreasonably attached to as they've battled in our name down the years. This is one such mini, a venerable warrior that has been leading my renegade hordes since I was a teenager. May I introduce Captain Aesir Vortag, formerly of the XII legion.</p><p>Vortag has a much storied history, mostly from some decades ago. Back in the late 80s and early 90s the Captain (though in his hubris he was Lord Vortag back then) led his renegades warbands against all comers. Myself and my buddies at the time gamed A LOT back then. We were all about Rogue Trader and then 2nd Edition 40k, and we played the bejeezus out of them. We built our own rudimentary, but enormous, campaign system. We even recorded many of our games in a large ledger, complete with maps, drawings and army lists. I have it to this day, and I get quite the warm fuzzy feeling when I look back over it. I was very close to posting one of my early doodles of Vortag in action from the ledger, but I will spare you that.</p><p>The Captain and his heretics butchered his way though Ork warbands, Tyranid hordes, loyalist Astartes, Imperial Guard detachments and assorted Eldar pirates. He accrued favourite enemies, and they harried one another over many a tabletop. </p><p>Aahh... such days. </p><p>But, eventually, the guns fell silent. Vortag's enemies took ship into the void (or college, as it was known on some worlds), and with no wars left to wage, the Captain and his warband made for the stasis pods. It was to be a long sleep.</p><p>Years passed, and other heroes came to the fore. Games came, games went, but I always had a tremendous soft spot for the infamous Captain.</p><p> And so, when a plan for some of my gaming brethren to gather this Spring for a Stargrave weekend, I decided it was time for a new chapter for my slumbering hero.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1NWhKZzn68-dLKeAmSIhnc-eiKRNGMAycsLS_0TvGJvaHe2cvUgqog_GocvRchAJV1lpe0k2OfU_7v-pTjPbjJAdO9ab-mRhEu8-HEmD4IKc6L64oCw-uZESrXAAKFKcxphkZmk6tESTSqzfnws-uDYoJpQdLHUpXeR6YERSBvpTirhyYoUBh4yWx/s1006/Khorne-40k_11.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1006" height="636" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1NWhKZzn68-dLKeAmSIhnc-eiKRNGMAycsLS_0TvGJvaHe2cvUgqog_GocvRchAJV1lpe0k2OfU_7v-pTjPbjJAdO9ab-mRhEu8-HEmD4IKc6L64oCw-uZESrXAAKFKcxphkZmk6tESTSqzfnws-uDYoJpQdLHUpXeR6YERSBvpTirhyYoUBh4yWx/w640-h636/Khorne-40k_11.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p>Vortag is one of the Jes Goodwin Warhammer Fantasy Realm of Chaos champions. One of the curious set that seemed to be blessed with 40k weaponry and technology. Back then, chaos champions could indeed be gifted with rewards from the 40th millennium. They make very fine fallen legionnaires.</p><p>At the risk of getting overly maudlin, I found it quite an emotional experience finally getting paint on the old villain. I used mostly contrast paints and medium over metallic base coats. His tail and sword were blended and stippled, before getting a unifying glaze or two. I had been using Flesh Tearers Red mixed with medium for red chaos armour, but I wanted to turn up the vibrancy on Vortag so I added some Blood Angels Red to the mix to make it roughly 1:1:1. It was extremely satisfying finally getting him painted. He's one of four great heroes of my early days of gaming that I wanted to give such treatment to. The other three are still awaiting their turn.</p><p><i>Space rippled and shivered as the space hulk translated back into realspace, or rather, most of it did. Sections of the hulk tapered off into translucent ghost-shapes and tatters of best-forgotten memories. The hulk, the </i><i>Odyssey of Devotion,</i><i> was never truly in one place, and it's labyrinth of ancient passageways could lead a traveller to an infinity of destinations and times, whether they willed it or no.</i></p><p><i>One such lost soul shivered into existence in the stillness of an abandoned gunnery deck, the dim lumens barely casting enough light to lift the figure out of the darkness. It stood there, in the silence. The darkness seemed to deepen, shifting and reaching out before suddenly recoiling as the warrior heaved a long cackling exhalation. Captain Vortag of the World Eaters Legion addressed his ship:</i></p><p><i>'Finally. Finally. You see, Malum? I told you. I told you I would find my way back.'</i></p><p><i>Around the speaker more figures coalesced, similar in aspect. The grim ruin of fallen Astartes, only barely recognisable as once noble space marines, but no less dangerous, and infinitely more wrathful. Some had clearly had to make battlefield repairs. Others seemed no different than moments, years or centuries earlier, when they had been scattered across the void. Others had had to abandon their armour entirely, and wore archaic or primitive replacements. Yet more had simply not returned at all. </i></p><p><i>They regarded their leader expectantly. Vortag did not give the expectation time to fester into recrimination.</i></p><p><i>'My brothers. Let us see what has become of both ship and crew in our absence. Let us see what gifts Inquisitor Balthazar Malum has left us.'</i></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdRXMRTW31uArV6NbzJEA_EQ1lG7Jpef7IPCrA6umA9JjgS56Y6Xy-MEm1xwca3rbJHGk5EUxW_NGd9C8jEdR9jX4kwxOGZRrlPaeUrLEMSFn4fJGBZEOlUTRlK3QpvdOTwup7VLO7NcBt_BFkbRSs7qWf550oDlkQqdfNFKfZ237x4NM5ffEV6m8L/s1490/Khorne-40k_12.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1490" height="430" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdRXMRTW31uArV6NbzJEA_EQ1lG7Jpef7IPCrA6umA9JjgS56Y6Xy-MEm1xwca3rbJHGk5EUxW_NGd9C8jEdR9jX4kwxOGZRrlPaeUrLEMSFn4fJGBZEOlUTRlK3QpvdOTwup7VLO7NcBt_BFkbRSs7qWf550oDlkQqdfNFKfZ237x4NM5ffEV6m8L/w640-h430/Khorne-40k_12.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">For now, Vortag leads a mob of the Odysseys mortal crew, but I do have some of his legionnaires in the painting pipeline.</div><p></p>Mr Saturdayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03092917415087033316noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8999006694513130928.post-40663241988395802152023-02-27T00:06:00.001+00:002023-02-27T00:06:33.578+00:00Stargrave 2 - Mutants and Murderers<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhN3_aHUC4nFWBj4CZ5i2L0KHnVUL4mEwwKHI4N-dK3BgbSF7Q9HWJR7wcwV8xPDYXbfLL4hlykqDRl4_riXxN6l9RdZzlllUheSHnZi9HkPtdN4OzMQkrvOblI5xagsPqZj5MqmRzgSsTIiXM2PU7e6Qti5aNIfZRi0JAced4Ovc6hEyiVXVFHC_vG/s1490/Khorne-40k_09.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1490" height="430" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhN3_aHUC4nFWBj4CZ5i2L0KHnVUL4mEwwKHI4N-dK3BgbSF7Q9HWJR7wcwV8xPDYXbfLL4hlykqDRl4_riXxN6l9RdZzlllUheSHnZi9HkPtdN4OzMQkrvOblI5xagsPqZj5MqmRzgSsTIiXM2PU7e6Qti5aNIfZRi0JAced4Ovc6hEyiVXVFHC_vG/w640-h430/Khorne-40k_09.jpg" width="640" /></a></div> <br /><p></p><p>Two more for the blood God. They both function as Ravaged Troopers in my Stargrave warband.</p><p>Abelard lost his life in service to Khorne as Conrad did, and was similarly revived by Khorne (after a fashion) to continue his ravages as a berserker. Life with a knee-face is probably pretty terrible, but that giant chainsword probably makes up for some of the practical setbacks. He keeps his hair looking sharp too. This guy. This guy looks like he is just the WORST. Look at that face. I mean, he must just love his job. Gerhart hails from The Blooded Killteam box, which is just cracker, and contains the long lost and now found again chaos ogryn and corrupted commissar. Some of the new 40k chaos kits are just magic. The Accursed Mutants and new Jakhals kits are delicious. </p><p>Gerhart is, as you'd expect, a heretic Astra Militarum trooper. Many such wretches serve Vortag, though few with the zeal and delight Gerhart displays. A total psychopath, he finds the service of Khorne a kind of murderous paradise, and indulges his brutal impulses with frenzied abandon. His continued existence, given his lack of caution in the face of enemy fire, is statistically almost zero, which has piqued Vortag's interest. Perhaps Khorne has plans for Gerhart.</p><p>Next up, the man himself, Aesir Vortag.</p>Mr Saturdayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03092917415087033316noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8999006694513130928.post-42867697246995122452023-01-24T23:11:00.000+00:002023-01-24T23:11:02.139+00:00Stargrave 1 - Beginnings of the Murderband<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeNCFvmhWyHYxIIVF8XNSr0e95_DAV3RToyjVmvSvkNifOjYYlT_Gip1I3n7tZIK-e1BeNP52t5TrTdbsaiytFCppp3w4tBm6wlIzYG_05-nDrFhNPzGbhgROEH6nPkZA2DnLCXzmuNQTbSFQObLIS1mYtMSLMCPrBxPNEL5rOIJ9Eda6o8-jejWGD/s1006/Khorne-40k_01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1006" height="636" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeNCFvmhWyHYxIIVF8XNSr0e95_DAV3RToyjVmvSvkNifOjYYlT_Gip1I3n7tZIK-e1BeNP52t5TrTdbsaiytFCppp3w4tBm6wlIzYG_05-nDrFhNPzGbhgROEH6nPkZA2DnLCXzmuNQTbSFQObLIS1mYtMSLMCPrBxPNEL5rOIJ9Eda6o8-jejWGD/w640-h636/Khorne-40k_01.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p>A change of direction here at the Mumblings this day. A grand meeting of my compatriots is planned in a few month's time for some Stargrave action. This meeting is a follow up to last year's very enjoyable Ghost Archipelago meet-up where I took the crew of <i>The Kraken</i> on to greater glory and had a very fun time doing it.</p><p>This year it's all sci-fi flavoured, and I'm using it as an opportunity to paint up a group I've long wanted to see on the table, namely Vortag's Murderband, Vortag is a character from my very earliest days of gaming, a World Eater Captain fallen far from his glorious origins as a brother of the XII legion. With just a scant few of his brethren left in his company, he has been forced to recruit warriors of lesser provenance in order to bolster his ragged command.</p><p>But despite his predicament, his ambitions are lofty indeed. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDzDCO2Ej6eAPsVnAea133qJLaCPldbHOd7eebe9hkBqUK8JdQ84JEUBTVm8v1uygxrJzKRO3-R-mZI-8pok9OL7iwumrgKYx8r6wL93qBHrwWN1mY-8T9DThHZnov-SldGRshN6sGtiI1qJHBGh3U364FPeSJWjj6f_3gFgc70EQyBS6FTl-Z4dIV/s1006/Khorne-40k_02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1006" height="636" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDzDCO2Ej6eAPsVnAea133qJLaCPldbHOd7eebe9hkBqUK8JdQ84JEUBTVm8v1uygxrJzKRO3-R-mZI-8pok9OL7iwumrgKYx8r6wL93qBHrwWN1mY-8T9DThHZnov-SldGRshN6sGtiI1qJHBGh3U364FPeSJWjj6f_3gFgc70EQyBS6FTl-Z4dIV/w640-h636/Khorne-40k_02.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p>One of these lesser warriors is Conrad Freig, beloved of Khorne. A mortal berserker, Conrad's devotion to the creed of gore is total. So pure was his faith that on his death, Khorne, though taking Conrad's skull as his due, breathed new life into his torn corpse. Conrad rose again, altered, but filled with almost unbearable zeal, ecstatic in the knowledge that his own skull had been deemed worthy. He, and others like him now serve as devastating line-breakers for Vortag's warbands.</p><p>Conrad is a Diehard mini, and I used a combination of contrast and standard paint techniques on him. Contrast paints are settling into my painting armoury nicely now. I love making glazes with them, and I've taken to using Wraithbone primer as standard now.</p><p>Hopefully I'll have another couple of murderous nutters finished shortly.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmGQQpAaH0Of8HApxeh51dUTF0ePq0tCxqijRYklrYG50YW6FI2od03TXf542kp3hrwGhWz5kcZOBnh1D0LSwUDjbTXIBTIMVX9X3HlvE_GdxvQp1dtH7Co-A75vBEzynHPcabO5D2Bpcn5Blvhc0FY2M1PhseEiVwsVIPe8VNxjiBRx8UO4l6dBt0/s1006/Khorne-40k_03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1006" height="636" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmGQQpAaH0Of8HApxeh51dUTF0ePq0tCxqijRYklrYG50YW6FI2od03TXf542kp3hrwGhWz5kcZOBnh1D0LSwUDjbTXIBTIMVX9X3HlvE_GdxvQp1dtH7Co-A75vBEzynHPcabO5D2Bpcn5Blvhc0FY2M1PhseEiVwsVIPe8VNxjiBRx8UO4l6dBt0/w640-h636/Khorne-40k_03.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>Mr Saturdayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03092917415087033316noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8999006694513130928.post-51583078253474295322022-11-20T20:25:00.002+00:002022-11-20T20:25:39.932+00:00Sláine 4 - Skull Sword Champions<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhucqGUYLsWlRoUHj28fMtDaOD-HgvMdheVfoW6V07qk-WJR7sKhtglMhQpUa7iXd1iCcb0X1M535nkBsFI_OqruD4IUwpTHo9KEqkCXK0QOhcjHOIWmH_Kh8L7s5h_skn6WGIjRFGXMzmUq4OVzVq1ycV0_AJlg5rfBPDTz5S90ozK1L7rdHTcdIVs/s1490/Slaine_12.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1490" height="430" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhucqGUYLsWlRoUHj28fMtDaOD-HgvMdheVfoW6V07qk-WJR7sKhtglMhQpUa7iXd1iCcb0X1M535nkBsFI_OqruD4IUwpTHo9KEqkCXK0QOhcjHOIWmH_Kh8L7s5h_skn6WGIjRFGXMzmUq4OVzVq1ycV0_AJlg5rfBPDTz5S90ozK1L7rdHTcdIVs/w640-h430/Slaine_12.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>Today we have MORE skull swords for the Sláine project. I didn't want him to look too undead, as he isn't, just super old and fairly stinking. I uses GW Contrast paints almost exclusively, bar some highlighting. A mix of Basilicarum Grey and Fyreslayer Flesh mixed with medium finally gave me a nice wash for the skin. Over that I glazed, mostly in the recesses and on the elbows, knees and knuckles, purple, pink and red to add some unholy life to the flesh. Some minor highlights of Flayed One Flesh and finally Pallid Wych Flesh and that was it. </div><div><br /></div><div>The rest of Feg used techniques I'd tried on the Skull Swords for leather, cloth etc. All pretty natural materials. I'm sticking with the Contrast paint approach for this project, and I'm learning more about their uses all the time. Right now I'm of a mind that they won't replace my traditional way of working, but they will certainly add a very nice set of new techniques to my painting arsenal.<p></p></div><div>The Siocast these fellows are made from holds an insane amount of detail, and is quite pliable. These lads won't break in a hurry. On the downside, files are useless. The material shreds when filed, so a super sharp scalpel is your best friend when cleaning mould lines and such. It holds paint just fine, at least it holds primer fine. I'm using Games Workshop Wraithbone primer on these lads.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0uFXsSzJc4RMNewBG-fDCLtY4YJk_Sn9FT1p1QmwV5Jxx8I1Ssgu5Hw635pCIEDXwiHJ0MskJJTnoUHYI4CxMP_tBss3vr9PjnzawBpFvhsnzSucp_WEN9ZGL-YhT7Y6mjR4Fri897bVM1ejoyWdo6FIN52uFBoMfZnz3Y6r9z794pKTT7CG19YQD/s1490/Slaine_04.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1490" height="430" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0uFXsSzJc4RMNewBG-fDCLtY4YJk_Sn9FT1p1QmwV5Jxx8I1Ssgu5Hw635pCIEDXwiHJ0MskJJTnoUHYI4CxMP_tBss3vr9PjnzawBpFvhsnzSucp_WEN9ZGL-YhT7Y6mjR4Fri897bVM1ejoyWdo6FIN52uFBoMfZnz3Y6r9z794pKTT7CG19YQD/w640-h430/Slaine_04.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">So considering I'm using new paint techniques on a new material, I think these lads are turning out pretty good. The shields designs are great, particularly the one you can see just above here. The designers have taken a lot from the art of Belardinelli, who drew the Sláine strip in the early days. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Skull sword packs come in 3s, and die easy, so I have a couple more groups of these evil guys to paint yet. I'm a huge 2000AD fan, and of Sláine in particular. With some <a href="https://sho3box.com/2022/05/17/slaine-kiss-my-axe-1/">friends already painting</a> up factions for the game, it wasn't something I wasn't going to be able to resist. So I gently laid aside the Silver Bayonet for now and took up the stone axe.</p><p></p><p>I decided to paint up the Drunes. I'm more often than not drawn to the bad guys, and their leader, the Lord Weird Slough Feg, is a childhood favourite. He's like Skeletor's cranky grandad. Sláine draws on rich seam of Celtic history and myth, and laces it heavily with delicious fantasy tropes. The Drunes, my faction of choice, misuse the Earth power running through the land, eventually turning it sour in their greed. So a lot to identify with there from modern life. At least Feg is straight up about destroying the world. Would vote for.</p><p>Anyhow, I decided with this project to go full Contrast paints, pale primer, the works. So with some (loads) of help from<a href="https://www.youtube.com/c/JuanHidalgoMiniatures"> Juan Hidalgo's YouTube channel</a>, I set to work on the first Skull Sword.</p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjd2muK54DihABSY64_kgMzByeiWN5Ly1K9G_Q556wuTu_1x03FoMnMl2uPBiSQESOBsBD1AT0kXuqvAe4zOI76rg4570qQ6YqRxEUK4IGFjFLcwk_v60F23LzWRDsUUqDkqNHCa26jg_P6I387ODpwPb9U1f5-IoJwzrPQ-rUI7h_CRyem0Ci3W_8Q/s706/Skull_Swords.webp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="346" data-original-width="706" height="314" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjd2muK54DihABSY64_kgMzByeiWN5Ly1K9G_Q556wuTu_1x03FoMnMl2uPBiSQESOBsBD1AT0kXuqvAe4zOI76rg4570qQ6YqRxEUK4IGFjFLcwk_v60F23LzWRDsUUqDkqNHCa26jg_P6I387ODpwPb9U1f5-IoJwzrPQ-rUI7h_CRyem0Ci3W_8Q/w640-h314/Skull_Swords.webp" width="640" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Lord Vade- I mean Feg will not be pleased.</td></tr></tbody></table><p>Skull Swords are Drune soldiery. I usually paint metals first, but this time they'd be the last thing I painted on the mini. I find contrast very pleasing to work with, but up until this point it had been more of a supplement to my style. This was a another level though, and I'd have to dispense with some tried and tested ways of doing things. Old dog, new tricks? I dunno...</p><p>I borrowed heavily from Juan's <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y82DDVzeZvk&list=PLAgUxju32DgRyVKAX0NE9WXqvvtoL9_kl&index=45&t=1662s">Kruleboy Eavy Contrast painting video</a>, as it has lots of natural materials like leather and wood. I find his videos suit my style well, and aren't too time consuming. One thing that did give me a bit of a pain in the arse is re-touching the primer after working on an adjacent area. That said, the Skull Sword took about four hours in total. I reckon I could shave an hour off that now I have the colours picked and I'm not searching for techniques. I'd probably batch paint troops too, maybe groups of three, which, conveniently is the size of a unit of Skull Swords in the Sláine game. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUj1g-OMy6IHwCXDDikaexyBRz72kKoPR2TWs__5lNq9CjX0yzAcjBOESkFS-E-PjLUBxFjxemG_EvRRYuk59XUAPAfTpV4E1n_qTZFWQpYsSkESua6m74YpChYP6OHGtOdFIlwxJNTWpDWQgmxuZhigOj-gWcwPRfuCRL1QVDCBofGrY8OUVWm1B1/s1006/Slaine_02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1006" height="636" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUj1g-OMy6IHwCXDDikaexyBRz72kKoPR2TWs__5lNq9CjX0yzAcjBOESkFS-E-PjLUBxFjxemG_EvRRYuk59XUAPAfTpV4E1n_qTZFWQpYsSkESua6m74YpChYP6OHGtOdFIlwxJNTWpDWQgmxuZhigOj-gWcwPRfuCRL1QVDCBofGrY8OUVWm1B1/w640-h636/Slaine_02.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="text-align: left;">I painted the bases in my usual recipe. I usually use a lot of drybrushing on metals, and I think I still will for things like chainmail and such. Contrast paints are fantastic, but they are just another arrow in the painting quiver. I do love being able to tint metals with Contrast so you can easily turn a single basecoat into steel, bronze, gold or whatever. I used Canoptek Alloy as the base metal colour on the Skull Sword as I like the warmer tone.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="text-align: left;">So, with the tester done, time for some buddies for this fellow.</span></div>Mr Saturdayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03092917415087033316noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8999006694513130928.post-45491788292287840692022-05-14T22:41:00.000+01:002022-05-14T22:41:24.984+01:00Silver Bayonet - Privates Festerev and Moulderoff<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_-ZH2bfloSSeMHnpKO_gv6_A0BdxhcDFELAz0Yn3uSvxcOEcpjf8FsWrMaM9H9HQdoXsiAnyUc2p1KPrQUwbFgei__l_UlS-jMCusBJLiuIYond4GNZmwqgmwr3IMjxa55GCCUGDupsRTyBn-XHi2Su8x_WzH0SARb6FKQUauSztWVw9CTuiRBTCm/s1044/Undead_46.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1044" height="614" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_-ZH2bfloSSeMHnpKO_gv6_A0BdxhcDFELAz0Yn3uSvxcOEcpjf8FsWrMaM9H9HQdoXsiAnyUc2p1KPrQUwbFgei__l_UlS-jMCusBJLiuIYond4GNZmwqgmwr3IMjxa55GCCUGDupsRTyBn-XHi2Su8x_WzH0SARb6FKQUauSztWVw9CTuiRBTCm/w640-h614/Undead_46.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />Joining my undead Russians for Silver Bayonet today are two reasonably fresh line zombies, privates Gregor Festerev and Dimitri Moulderoff. Still having most of their faculties (and fingers) means these fellows can still recall how to load and fire a musket, though they won't be making it to any parades in the near future. Clad in Winter greatcoats, which are more to keep them in one piece than fight off the cold, these lumbering infantrymen are the backbone of Morozov's small force. Able to keep firing even while taking hits that would put down a living man several times over, these two loyal soldiers will follow the vampire until utterly destroyed. Even then, Rigorov has a very special, possibly magical sewing kit that can mend even the most terrible damage, rumoured to have been given to him by the Baba Yaga herself.<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOU5yqh0jAwMWNExmk3tig4KGmWQrdLdVE0hDjNXLUqgn7HPxHYYQ5J0YhOojfH-yx2YTUZUMXV3BH-LlyulioZJmK3cbBKUHnwVEOMrgrwlUNv0R7IUhQS6cSJsmc2FUVK0QsUAVf68IwWGH698-IrYlveWgVJpdVUskdaFut5wmJDryX2274VtHo/s1044/Undead_47.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1044" height="614" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOU5yqh0jAwMWNExmk3tig4KGmWQrdLdVE0hDjNXLUqgn7HPxHYYQ5J0YhOojfH-yx2YTUZUMXV3BH-LlyulioZJmK3cbBKUHnwVEOMrgrwlUNv0R7IUhQS6cSJsmc2FUVK0QsUAVf68IwWGH698-IrYlveWgVJpdVUskdaFut5wmJDryX2274VtHo/w640-h614/Undead_47.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div><br /></div>These two ambulatory carcasses are from Alernative Armies Flintloque range, more specifically the Deadloque boxed set. I liked the ragged greatcoats they are wearing, it sits nicely with the Winter vibe I'm going with. I have quite a few of these fellas, so it's nice to get at least two painted up for service. <div><br /></div><div>Painting-wise, I spent far too long looking at Napoleonic Russian uniform guides. Targeted contrast washes are playing more and more of a role in my painting, they are incredibly useful paints. For example, Gregor's beard was too grey initially, but one contrast wash later, problem solved. I might go more heavy into contrast paints for my next project, and start with a (GASP) white undercoat.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5pr9k3RLTZIjj0wzGwf8kseTFahR9AXM88zsLk07tuiCRxhTlYR9gy3tMAZqiJdis7vQKXrwUGIXHPn1LCKT5nK72YaygfQVXXmYBbJPuF96-yzZOkCETUWaXmmYSr5LrKQcqEjKp1eh0JdIi9NyrgCxDEIpWeXrrI3DXoPtp43-7yGV7vZSKACb5/s1490/Undead_43.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1490" height="430" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5pr9k3RLTZIjj0wzGwf8kseTFahR9AXM88zsLk07tuiCRxhTlYR9gy3tMAZqiJdis7vQKXrwUGIXHPn1LCKT5nK72YaygfQVXXmYBbJPuF96-yzZOkCETUWaXmmYSr5LrKQcqEjKp1eh0JdIi9NyrgCxDEIpWeXrrI3DXoPtp43-7yGV7vZSKACb5/w640-h430/Undead_43.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div>So that's the unit up to about half strength. Two odd pieces, a human-size canopic jar of evil from Bob Olley and a box of offal from the Citadel Night Horror range.<p>Of note was the chance to crack open my precious hex pot of Citadel Polished Blue, which I used to give the canopic jar a touch of glamour. Having long served Kapitán Morozov as a tracker through the deep woods and vast wildernesses of Europe, his skills have lost little of their edge despite Igors subsequent lack of eyes, nose or ears. By using thinned Contrast Black Templar over an Eshin Grey basecoat it gave me a good deal of the shading for his coat right away. Some stark edge highlights and that was the greatcoat just about done. On the mask I used one of my paints du jour on, Corax White. An excellent base for white as it is off white enough to allow pure white highlights to show over a Corax White basecoat, though in this case I shaded it with the appropriate Apothecary White, thinned to about 50/50.</p><p>His undercoat, belt, gloves and staff were painted various browns, shaded with Agrax Earthshade and then highlighted with Pallid Wych Flesh mixed with the base colour. Some thinned Seraphim Sepia on the robes and gloves gave the leather a little more warmth.</p><p>The lamp I wanted to burn quite low, so I added several glazes of Nazdreg Yellow contrast paint around the metal of the lamp and onto the greatcoat. I'm going with Russians, but as is my want, undead Russians. I'm using this project as an excuse to paint some of the Witchlands Flintloque minis I've had in storage for some decades now. They're pretty much ideal. So, off we go!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The first member of the band is the enigmatic Kapitán Radu Morozov. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><i>A vampire of impressive age, he hails from Wallachia originally, but has spent many years roaming the Ottoman Empire for reasons known only to himself. Most recently he has been pursing rumours of a Turkish town plagued by two mysterious Janissaries, notable as the Janissaries had been violently disbanded decades earlier. To secure the location of the town he has gathered a retinue to pursue such leads as he has gathered thus far. </i></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><i><br /></i></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><i>Radu is not of a mind to let any would be vampire hunters hinder his search, and is something of an artist in his use of extreme violence.</i></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">So, the unit is off the blocks. This is an idea that goes back to the very beginnings of the genestealer cult, when a desperate patriarch might seek power from the dark Gods. Fascinating Xenos/Chaos mashup ensues. I adored the coven when it appeared in White Dwarf 116. The whole idea of a cult turning to chaos fascinated me. I mean, how could my young mind resist this illustration by John Blanche?<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zsGAMWX0L0o/YZ-_KAQH1CI/AAAAAAAAHYk/uhl2n4aiuYw7-URIhhTNIjzhfTjUbaFrQCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/image2.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1364" data-original-width="2048" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zsGAMWX0L0o/YZ-_KAQH1CI/AAAAAAAAHYk/uhl2n4aiuYw7-URIhhTNIjzhfTjUbaFrQCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h426/image2.jpeg" width="640" /></a></div><p>My coven is an offshoot from the main cult. What's that you say? A coven inside a cult? Jesus Dave. </p><p>I've been accused of cramming far too many themes into my projects, (<a href="https://mrsaturdaysmumblings.blogspot.com/2018/03/draculas-america-emperors-guard.html">Big Trouble in Little China Terracotta robots using stolen Eldar tech anyone</a>?) but I care not a whit. So, my Admech Genestealer cult now has a chaotic element, and the one I most wanted to make was the hierarch in chaos armour (closely followed by the purestrain with daemon weapon). You can see the original <i>4th Generation Hybrid Magus with chaos armour</i> below. I've wanted to convert one evert since. If you have copies of White Dwarf 114 - 116 I heartily recommend taking a look.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DmsLEbStDZg/YZ-_p-Fz9GI/AAAAAAAAHYs/_xzWppAfp9wearfmDXNCkAArkDf1kQdUQCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/image1.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1508" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DmsLEbStDZg/YZ-_p-Fz9GI/AAAAAAAAHYs/_xzWppAfp9wearfmDXNCkAArkDf1kQdUQCLcBGAsYHQ/w472-h640/image1.jpeg" width="472" /></a></div><p>Many of my favourites hark back to these issues. Mutant bombs, cult limos, rogue psykers (Blackstone Fortress rogue psyker, I'm looking at you) and cult beastmen. It also cemented the Imperial Guard plastic kit as the ideal brood brother base model. I have managed to see these models in the flesh since, and now I love them all the more. Little did I know that years later my most fervent hobby prayers would be answered and we were showered in cult kits. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_CYUS0A00Cw/YZ_A2ndDvmI/AAAAAAAAHY0/Ak--PEJg340Ta8kaIJAAhFEz2McAFWMBACLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/image0.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_CYUS0A00Cw/YZ_A2ndDvmI/AAAAAAAAHY0/Ak--PEJg340Ta8kaIJAAhFEz2McAFWMBACLcBGAsYHQ/w480-h640/image0.jpeg" width="480" /></a></div><p>I gathered up the parts for the Hierarch (he'd be a Primus these days) and set them by. Fairly recently I finished up my pirate crew (for now) and wanted a new palette cleanser. So I began work on Khrovak Starn, Hierarch and disciple of Khorne.</p><p>Khrovak is based on a Khorne champion with a scattering of cult parts and a Legion of the Damned bolter. His sword is from the Wrathmongers/Skullreapers kit. An insanely useful kit for Khorne fans. He only needed some minor greenstuff work.</p><p>Much of the colour palette was already set, but the on the armour I wanted to try something new. A while back I used contrast paints to paint the black iron armour on my wights and wondered if I could do something similar here. I painted the armour in Chainmail and then gave it a 1:1 Contrast Medium:Flesh Tearers Red. I settled nicely while still allowing the sheen of the metallic through. I edge highlighted it with Stormhost Silver, recess washed it here and there with Agrax Earthshade with a wee bit of Druchii Violet, and that was it. I'm very happy with it and I'll be using it on any future rage-based armour schemes.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bYEP6WFi-Xo/YZ_V-Oi9jEI/AAAAAAAAHY8/u8KOyCh3IZoq9eW3nN_U6rchd_4UJRFRgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1044/GCult_02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1044" height="614" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bYEP6WFi-Xo/YZ_V-Oi9jEI/AAAAAAAAHY8/u8KOyCh3IZoq9eW3nN_U6rchd_4UJRFRgCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h614/GCult_02.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p>The black daemon sword is highlighted with various greens and then glazed with Waywatcher Green. I think it sets off nicely against the red armour and also matches the rest of the cult who tend to have green gun casings and power packs on their backs. </p><p>The other thing I had to settle on a colour scheme for was the wee bone dagger. This might seem simple as its well, bone, but I'm thinking ahead to Acolyte and Tyranid Warrior boneswords. I added the black 'jewels' with green highlight to give it a weird slightly icky organic look and I think it worked.</p><p>So now I think adding a possessed Magus and maybe a unit of beastmen would give me enough to add to my normal cult to field a coven. My mindslaves can double nicely as mutants too. </p><p>That's the coven itch scratched for now!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dfp-mw9CAo8/YZ_X8tkL4JI/AAAAAAAAHZE/6R1cLWkkrjwbh2TVId8Rs5L7wARDW5UrQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1490/GCult_03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1490" height="430" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dfp-mw9CAo8/YZ_X8tkL4JI/AAAAAAAAHZE/6R1cLWkkrjwbh2TVId8Rs5L7wARDW5UrQCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h430/GCult_03.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Mr Saturdayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03092917415087033316noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8999006694513130928.post-20285252967703146562021-09-21T14:40:00.002+01:002021-09-21T17:57:03.447+01:00Ghost Archipelago 9 - Boarding Hooke, the Drowned Ogre<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NHG8NWNlPJI/YUnKutt3HAI/AAAAAAAAHWQ/_LRtQC-MuyQxslfsdoG6UrdmxzMVFoNogCLcBGAsYHQ/s1006/Undead_35.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1006" height="636" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NHG8NWNlPJI/YUnKutt3HAI/AAAAAAAAHWQ/_LRtQC-MuyQxslfsdoG6UrdmxzMVFoNogCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h636/Undead_35.jpg" width="640" /></a></div> <div>After a slight hiatus, the Mumblings returns with another undead offering for your perusal. Allow me to present Mr Hooke, or as his crewmates know him, Boarding Hooke.<br /><p></p></div><div><i>Sloughing and slouching his way around the deck of the Kraken, the lumbering form of Mr Hooke is not a sight for the squeamish. His flesh, softened by his long slumber in the ocean depths, is saggy and reeking. 'Like a big loaf o wet bread ee' is.' Bosun Woodlock has been heard to say of the ponderous ogre, not entirely without affection.</i></div><div><i><br /></i></div><div><i>Even though Hooke seems constantly on the verge of disintegration, he is shockingly resilient and devilishly strong. His flesh swallows weapons lodged in his sodden bulk while he pulverises their wielders with his club. </i><i>The crew know him as Boarding Hooke due to the massive rusty hook that serves as his left hand in part, but as much for his talents in boarding actions. Despite appearances, Hooke is a strong swimmer, and can scale the side of a vessel and annihilate half the crew before they've even loaded a musket. When Hooke and Smiling Jack work in tandem they can clear a vessel in jig time.</i></div><div><i><br /></i></div><div><i>When not splattering decks with brains and offal Hooke tends to the Kraken as a master rigger. He is quite dextrous, considering.</i></div><div><i><br /></i></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rV7MgM1IoCU/YUneAfCOnsI/AAAAAAAAHWY/AD7ZNUFTDTQqBg4NDblxuUbXy41di_BKACLcBGAsYHQ/s1006/Undead_37.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1006" height="636" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rV7MgM1IoCU/YUneAfCOnsI/AAAAAAAAHWY/AD7ZNUFTDTQqBg4NDblxuUbXy41di_BKACLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h636/Undead_37.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><i><br /></i></div><div>Hooke is a rather large resin Ogre from Warploque Miniatures. His large expanse of flesh was most pleasing to work on, and he is packed with detail, such as his little octopus friend on his back. I used my usual palette, though I did take GW Screamer Pink out for a spin on his intestines. It's a brilliant colour I plan on using more often. That and GW Contrast Volupus Pink are my new best pals.</div><div><br /></div><div>His base is encrusted with marine debris, including some real crab shell that's been in my bits box about thirty years. I knew I'd get to use it one day.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Va5wOdF6LLM/YUne68plUFI/AAAAAAAAHWg/1iWwapZR4lw_2Dl_FdzDyhPDvYq5NqRVACLcBGAsYHQ/s1006/Undead_36.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1006" height="636" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Va5wOdF6LLM/YUne68plUFI/AAAAAAAAHWg/1iWwapZR4lw_2Dl_FdzDyhPDvYq5NqRVACLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h636/Undead_36.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div>With the addition of Hooke, that brings my band of undead pirates to completion for now. I do plan on coming back to add a couple more members, but one needs a change to refresh the hobby mojo. Hopefully I will get to use them in a game of Ghost Archipelago in the not too distant future, but for now we will step down the gangplank and bid the Kraken farewell as she vanishes over the horizon.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-t1fS4Sj6_Ww/YUnf1huuqYI/AAAAAAAAHWo/WdLTTXroeBAXo_wH4qThAYQLC88oToLsACLcBGAsYHQ/s1250/Undead_38.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="998" data-original-width="1250" height="510" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-t1fS4Sj6_Ww/YUnf1huuqYI/AAAAAAAAHWo/WdLTTXroeBAXo_wH4qThAYQLC88oToLsACLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h510/Undead_38.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div><br /></div>Mr Saturdayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03092917415087033316noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8999006694513130928.post-37260422014310826472021-07-07T16:57:00.001+01:002021-07-07T16:57:29.312+01:00Ghost Archipelago 8 - Jarl Hakon<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-S8ZbHAppZyA/YOXBhe1DwPI/AAAAAAAAHTw/bVpbQ4BSJYA2h8U5PTSEXYNOp-9Pp6gXACLcBGAsYHQ/s1006/Undead_33.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1006" height="636" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-S8ZbHAppZyA/YOXBhe1DwPI/AAAAAAAAHTw/bVpbQ4BSJYA2h8U5PTSEXYNOp-9Pp6gXACLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h636/Undead_33.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /> A red letter day for the Ghost Archipelago project today. With the addition of the hunter, Jarl Hakon, the crew finally becomes useable in games, having reached ten members. I do plan on adding a few more, but it's nice to have game-ready crew.<div><br /></div><div>Jarl here is another Arcworlde sculpt. How that rope cast is a mystery to me, but it looks cool. He'll join the crew as another specialist.</div><div><br /></div><div><i>Jarl is only nominally a member of the crew of the Kraken. Though willing to pitch in when required, he is his own creature, and is oft left to his own peculiar devices. No member of the crew is ever foolish enough to touch Gertrud, Jarl's viciously barbed harpoon.</i></div><div><br /></div><div><i>The Kraken came across Jarl Hakon floating on a battered section of ship's hull. He stood astride the wreck, harpoon in hand, as if waiting. When called out to, he shouted back that his ship, the Naglfar, had been attacked by a great beast that morning, and he was the last surivor. He had driven it off with his harpoon, but it was a cunning devil and would wait until he grew weary and attack again and again.</i></div><div><i><br /></i></div><div><i>As Jarl roared back this answer The Old Man of the Sea leaned in close to Captain Wither and informed him that Jarl had, in fact, been keeping vigil on the limpet-encrusted remnants of the Naglfar for more than eighty years. Such had been his punishment at the hands of the wight whale. But his penace was at an end now, and the Old Man had need of Jarl's skills.</i></div><div><i><br /></i></div><div><i>Thus the Old Man whispered down over the side of the Kraken and across the waves to the agitated Norseman. No soul aboard the ship heard what bargain passed between them, but soon enough Jarl was clambering aboard. Since that day he has proven his mastery over beasts of land and sea, and while he is not to be drawn to discuss the fate of the Naglfar, he is stalwart and reliable, which is enough.</i></div><div><br /></div><div>Jarl has an old school whaler thing going on, so I painted his coat like old oilskins. The rest pretty much followed the recipes used on the other crew members. He's a big lad, so he went on a 32mm base. I try to keep base sizes consistent, but sometimes you have to go with what looks best.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-v65skq6OacY/YOXI8x-pb5I/AAAAAAAAHT4/STc049etW5AA_brBSZ53QiTeAKTyRV9gACLcBGAsYHQ/s1490/Undead_34.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1490" height="430" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-v65skq6OacY/YOXI8x-pb5I/AAAAAAAAHT4/STc049etW5AA_brBSZ53QiTeAKTyRV9gACLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h430/Undead_34.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">So there we have it! The crew of the Kraken is ready to explore the Ghost Archipelago in search of redemption, and possibly booty. I have a few more pieces to add, some treasure and one or two more crew. Or several. I have fishmen (Like the lads from The Flying Dutchman in Pirates of the Caribbean), more undead pirates, and various sea creatures and monsters all vying for a place on the Kraken. With a few choice additions I can have a viable Warcry band shortly.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">So, I hope you've enjoyed the slow muster of the Kraken's compliment, sure twas only a joy to work on me hearties!
