Shadow Empire - Lo Pan's Yaoguai

The first miniatures of 2017 are finished. Three Yaoguai (demons) join the retinue of Lo Pan. The colour scheme is much brighter than I've been used to painting lately. I wanted them to look quite vibrant and for the saturation to make them seem slightly otherworldly. I added some silver into the highlights for the sash to make it look more like silk. Not too easy to see here, but the shine on the sash is pleasant when the miniatures are in hand. The robes got some heavy glazing treatment until they were extremely vibrant. The flesh then had to be fairly neutral so that there wouldn't be too many competing colours. The horns and hair followed suit. In the end I'm very happy with them, though I did see a wee chip on one of the demon's robes! (It's been repaired since.)

With these guys finished, I only have Lo Pan himself left to add to the unit and they are done. I have the next unit for the army already prepped and primed, a unit of six floating guardians.

  1. I used to get jealous when people had great hobby ideas I wish I'd thought about before but with you guys I 'm now getting a huge satisfaction boost from such projects instead. This is one of those, right choices (in my view and probably yours) one after the other and very strong identity that still bears your touch.
    I'm a fan.

    1. Thanks very much JB! With a project like this, where there aren't endless choices for miniatures, it's very gratifying to find just the kind of models I'm after. The Demons set for A Fistful of Kung Fu (that supplied these three lads) was just perfect.

  3. I agree with your decision to keep the face pale when the robes were super blue. It really sets the miniatures off. What is it the cool kids say these days about good paint jobs? It "pops"? Or something like that :)

    They look great!

    1. Thanks, it was a bit of a minefield negotiating the colours. I had gotten quite used to my reds and earthy tones. It did me good to leave the comfort zone.

  4. These are exceptionally nice Dave, well done.

The picture of the guy leading one of the terracotta units is overflowing with theme.

    1. Cheers, I am super happy with them. Seeing how the look against the terracotta troops has given me a huge mojo boost to get onto the rest of the army.

    1. Thanks Simon. I'm wasn't sure if the contrast between the demons and terracotta warriors would work, but in the end it turned out better than I hoped. That now gives me leave to do the same with the other demon-like characters in the army.
