Hobby Cave - DIY Paint Shelves

I recently added a major upgrade to my hobby cave. While perusing the blogs I came across a rather nice solution to paint storage and, more importantly, paint display. If only I could remember which post it was, I'd add a link...

Ah well. Anyway, I had considered a paint carousel, but they are little expensive, and I think slightly unwieldy, as well as taking up a lot of room. I dumped this notion, and after reading the afore-mentioned blog, designed my own paint shelves in vector format for accuracy, and sent the eps files to a mate of mine who has access to that most magical of machines, the industrial router. He knocked out the shapes in mdf and skybond (plastic sandwiched between two sheets of aluminium) and I screwed them together and sealed the mdf. All this cost me the grand total of zero, which is groovy with me. I still have to paint it, but now at least I can see ALL my paints, which is unbelievably handy, and looks pretty smart too. I did find out I had three pots of regal blue, how did that happen?

  4. Yours looks pretty great from here. It is really convenient having access to a router. I get him to rout custom mdf bases for all my terrain too.

  7. I've been thinking of making something like this for a while - the clutter on my painting table is a thing of horror. However, without a router or a handy friend with one, I think I would be reduced to making the thing with a saw...

  8. Any signage company should have a router in house, and it shouldn't be expensive to get them to make some custom bits for you. Like yourself Hoodling, I got tired of having stuff all over, I had paints in three or four boxes, and I tended to forget which one I had. Hence the three pots of regal blue!
