Fimir - Fimm Champion Finished

After a couple of months of assembly, I recently pulled out the brushes to start painting up what I have built so far. First up was the fimm unit champion, the fian. I was very curious to see how my wee converted fimir would turn out, it's the culmination of a fair bit of rumination into how to make a human-scale fimir that I could make an army's worth of. I used the same scheme as the test model, for the most part, with a couple of alterations. I'm pretty happy with him, and it gives me an insight into how the whole unit will look when it's done.

Time to start the fimir batch painting machine I guess.

  4. Excellent paint job and conversion. It took me few seconds to realize that a savage orc was the basis for the model, so I'd say you were very successful at creating a unique mini!

  5. Looks great! My only suggestion is to add a bit of highlight to the murky swamp bubbles. Otherwise it is a solid model.

  6. Great conversion and excellent painting. I like your style - very clean painting and smooth highlights with some great additions (the freehand is simple yet it works really well).
I also think the picture could be a little better as this one has a bit too much of yellow hue (probably it was taken at night). You might want to try using diffusers. Here's a nice article about it I've recently come across: http://www.dieseldm.com/2011/05/photographing-warmachine-miniatures-part-1/

  7. Great Fimir model, really like how you painted him, smooth and with neutral colours with some great details as the warpaint/tattos. And together with the awesome looking base really make it a lovely model, can't wait seeing the whole finished unit.

  8. Thanks very much everyone! It's great to get feedback on this guy. The mud bubble could do with a further highlight, I'll attend to that. Thanks for the article on diffusers Viruk, that's a great tip.

One suggestion I got was to add a spot colour, as the palette is very earthy. I'm in two minds about it, what I was thinking was to add a blue jewel affect to the centre of the brooch under his neck. What do folks think?

  9. If it is a color you think will work itself into your army or unit as a whole I say go for it. Personally I like the earthy swamp monster look of this guy.

  10. Yeah, it would be a spot colour I'd use throughout the army, for jewels, the eyes of magical creatures, small points on the models. The palette was deliberately chosen to be quite natural, skin, leathers, furs and so on, but I wonder would a contrasting spot colour make the army pop as a whole.

  11. Hi

(I had thought that I had already posted a comment - maybe a senior moment!)

I've enjoyed following your Fimir posts and just wish I'd had the idea first.

    Well done.

  12. Agree with Randroid, and I do think it looks ace as it is but a little spot colour that is going to show in the whole army would make it pop even more. And on this model I agree that the brooch would be a nice place to put this spot colour, keep up the great work!

  13. Thanks Tony!

Cheers for the comments SpaceCowboy, I'm pretty much convinced on the spot colour now. A blue I think. Right, time for some jewel painting!

  15. Thanks Fimm, high praise indeed coming another fimir clan...

I've added a turquoise jewel to his brooch, and it really does set him off. It's subtle, but I don't want this to be the 'obvious spot colour'. I want people to barely notice it, and yet improve the visual appeal of the army. I'm too tired to take a photo now, mayhap tomorrow..
